Discord Emoji Slots and Boost Levels Explained (2026)

Discord's emoji rules trip people up because three different things are limited by three different mechanisms: how many emoji a server can hold (boost level), who can upload them (a permission), and who can type an animated one (Nitro). Get those apart and the rest is arithmetic.

Slots by boost level

• •No boosts: 50 static emoji and 50 animated emoji. Every server starts here, and the animated slots are there from day one.
• •Level 1 (2 boosts): 100 static and 100 animated.
• •Level 2 (7 boosts): 150 static and 150 animated.
• •Level 3 (14 boosts): 250 static and 250 animated.
• •The two pools are separate. Filling the static slots does not touch the animated ones, and boosting raises both by the same amount.

Who can upload

Uploading needs the Manage Expressions permission in that server, which admins and moderators have by default and can grant to any role. It has nothing to do with Nitro. A server with zero boosts and a member with the permission can fill all 50 animated slots.

What Nitro changes

• •Typing an animated custom emoji into a message needs Nitro or Nitro Basic. Members without it can see animated emoji other people post, and can react with them, but the picker greys them out for sending.
• •Using a server's custom emoji in a different server also needs Nitro. Without it, custom emoji only work in the server they were uploaded to.
• •Nitro does not add slots to a server. Slots come from boosts; Nitro is a per-member perk. A Nitro subscriber's two free boosts are how the two connect.

File rules, so the upload goes through

• •Under 256 KB, displayed at 128 by 128 pixels. Discord downsizes larger images, so a file already at 128 keeps its edges.
• •PNG, JPEG, WebP or AVIF for stills; GIF for animation. A GIF in a static slot keeps only its first frame.
• •Transparent backgrounds. A white box around an emoji is visible on every dark theme, which is most of Discord.

Filling the slots without a designer

Fifty static and fifty animated is a lot of art.
